- Tourist guides -
Course leading to Italian Language competence test to be held in December 2008
Module 1 - Special Language Terminology
- (8 hrs)
Module one consists of guided tours of Mdina, Rabat, Valletta and Birgu with
the explanation of the most important buildings (churches, palaces and objects
of interest) in Italian. Particular emphasis will be placed on artistic terminology.
Guides will be provided with typed notes, which will be very useful to them
in their tours with Italians.
The guided tour of Mdina includes a description of Mdina main gate, the façade
of the Magisterial Palace, the facades of the Inguanez Palace, the old Università
and the Cathedral Museum. The tour includes a detailed description of the exterior
and the interior parts of the Cathedral.
The Rabat tour includes a detailed description of the Domus Romana, St Paul’s
Church, the Grotto and Wignacourt Museum, as well as a visit to Ta’ Giezu
Church.
The Birgu tour includes a visit to the main historical places, such as the Main Gate, the Post of Castille, the main auberges, the La Valette Museum, St Lawrence church, and the buildings along the Birgu Marina.
The Valletta tour includes a description of Valletta, starting from the main
gate. Observations will be made on the Francia building, Victory Church, the
church of St Catherine, the Auberge of Castille, the Auberge of Italy. A detailed
explanation of the exterior and interior parts of St John’s Church will
be provided. A description of the Magisterial Palace will be provided. Throughout
the tours emphasis will be placed on those places and objects which had connections
with Italy.

Module 2 - General Language abilities
and Cultural annotations- (6 hrs)
Lectures will tackle topics on various aspects of Maltese and Italian Civilization
and Society of particular interest for tourist guides in continuous contact
with Italian tourists. These include Art, Music, Traditions, History, Literature,
Cinema, etc. Tourist guides will thus be able to enhance their knowledge and
vocabulary.
Particular emphasis will be laid on certain structures of the Italian language
and words and idiomatic phrases that might give rise to ambiguities will also
be discussed during the Course.
